Katie Sfetkidis is an experimental artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). Since graduating from a Masters of Contemporary Art at the VCA in 2018, she has been developing an investigative, socially engaged practice that questions the role that art and the artist can play in civic life. This has taken many different forms including; running for Mayor in the City of Melbourne (The Mayor Project, 2018), being appointed Feminist Emissary for the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre (Women’s COVID-19 Time Capsule, 2020-2022), taking to the streets (The Feminist Poster Project, 2022) & directly communicating with members of Parliament (Dear Minister, 2019). As an artist, her research projects often unfold over many years, involving various public outcomes along the way. These outcomes differ in scale and in medium & have included: drawing, video, performance, installation, artist books & public discussions. Her work often involves elements of social engagement & speaking with people in communities is an important part of my research practice.
